WHERE DID THE JEWS GO AFTER THE HOLOCAUST?

79

By sheila b.

SOME DID GO HOME, BUT MOST COULDN'T STAY

MOST who went home found a family living in their house or apartment. It wasn't their home anymore.

THEIR furniture was gone. The clothes they were forced to leave behind were gone. There was nothing left. (The furniture is still in the homes of the people who stole it.)

OTHERS who went home were forced to flee for their lives.

CONTRARY to what the press of the time reported, and what's been taught in schools ever since, anit-Semitism was as virulent as ever in Europe, especially in Poland and Austria and Germany.

IN MANY towns and villages, returning Jews were spit at and screamed at, told to leave and told they should have died in the camps.

AND there were pograms, planned violence, against returned Jews in many towns, mainly in Poland.

THE best known is the pogram in Kielce, Poland, on July 4, 1946, a year after the war had ended.

APPROXIMATELY 200 Jews had returned to the town. From concentration camps. They were still ill, weak, and traumatized.

THE townspeople, including the police, attacked those Jews. Forty-two were murdered, and another forty were badly injured.

STILL more of the Jews who survived the Nazi concentration camps were kept imprisoned in the concentration camps.

YES, they were. Only the titles of the camps were changed, now called Displaced Persons Camps. They were spread about Europe, from Germany to Italy to Austria.

FOOD was rationed.

THE Jews were kept locked in behind wire fences.

THEY lived in dormitories.

THE rationale of the various governments was that the Jews, if let free, might attack their citizens.

EMACIATED, half dead, the Jews merely wanted their freedom and peace. The authorities knew that.

ACCORDING to reports, there were one million Jews in Displaced Persons Camps after the war. Men, women, and children. I think there were more. The numbers who were able to go to America or Britain or France, plus the few who were able to return to their homes, don't add up to two million.

TWO-THIRDS of the Jews from Nazi-occupied countries died during the war years. It seems, then, that there were about three million survivors.

VARIOUS countries allowed a certain number of Jews to enter, but every country had quotas.

SO - some Jews tried to go home, only to find they no longer had a home. Others were kept in the camps. Nearly all of the Jews from Nazi-occupied countries were homeless, with nowhere to go.

THEIR last hope, their only hope, was to go to the Holy Land.

A CLANDESTINE army of Jews grew out of the circumstances they found themselves in. Their aim was to help the homeless, stateless Jews get to the Holy Land.

THE British, who controlled the Holy Land at that time, had a quota for Jews allowed to emmigrate.

JEWS caught trying to enter the Holy Land illegally were sent to internment camps on Cyprus, behind wire fences once again. Food was rationed. They lived in dormitories.

THE Nazis didn't succeed in exterminating every Jew, but those who survived did not find a welcoming world when the war ended. They weren't wanted - anywhere.

EXCEPT in the Holy Land.

EVENTUALLY, the United Nations approved creating the State of Israel, side by side with the State of Palestine, in the Holy Land.

THE Palestinians forfeited their state when they started a war against Israel and lost that war.

HOW many people know that?

BUT Jews do know their history. That's why they have survived in Israel against great odds.

THEY have to.

THE world should worry more about nuclear weapons in Muslim hands.

NEVER AGAIN is the Jewish promise.

NEVER AGAIN will any nation slaughter the Jewish people without bringing great suffering upon themselves.

IF there ever comes a time there are no Jews in the Holy Land, there will be no Holy Land.

Thank you for this Hub. I find it extremely hard to believe that Israel will be going anywhere at this point. It is simply far too well established.

Of course, as I am sure you know, the vast majority of Jews live outside of Israel (including many of my own family-members), and express no desire to actually live there (my grandmother, for example, has not been outside of her hometown in Canada for nearly two decades).

A lot of countries followed "stealth" anti-semitism, Canada included, during the War. The sad fact is that, while Hitler and the Nazis were severely unhinged in their rabid hatred of Jews (though in practice these were not real Jews, but some Jews in their heads... pure madness), the truth is that the British, Russians, and many others were overtly anti-semitic in many ways.

Best wishes

What an important and wonderful hub. Every civilized nation in this world should rally around Israel and insure their survival. They are the keepers of democracy in a very violent Middle East.

Thank you, sheila b! I wish many people will read this hub. My mother's family escaped from Ukraine just hours before Nazi’s invaded their town. They didn’t return there after the war, they stayed in the region to where they were evacuated. But many many years after my mother took me to her childhood town. She found there some of her neighbors, but not all of them came to visit her. As others explained, those who didn’t come were those who were stealing things from their abandoned house. Probably they were afraid that my mother would demand return of their belongings. It was funny for us, as not because of this we came.

I felt at home living in Israel. Nobody there can tell you “go home”, like I was told in Russia; but even if some jerk told it (meaning, go back to Russia), it was easy to answer: I AM at home!

I will go back home some day. I know, I will.

An interesting, thought-provoking Hub. What you include is very sad. There is still a lot of anti-Semitism about even in Britain.

Obama tricked the Jewish population during the campaign. Now they're finding out just how anti-Israeli he is. Even his websitre barackobama.com has anti- Semitic posts.

The Holocaust reverberates down the generations. Each year in my region lots of German tourists arrive. I look at the older ones, and the very young, and think of what part the old ones may have played and also the fact that, while they have their little grandchildren with them, generations of jews were never to be born after the genocide in the '40s.

I had Jewish relatives flee Poland. They are now US citizens, in the gold trade. My mum was a child in London and had to leave her mum to live in the country, to escape the Blitz. She is now happily married to a man who's parents were Austrian nazis, a choice to keep their own family alive. We need to learn from history, remain abhorent of what was done, and vigilent that it never happens again, but the people alive now are not the people of then.

okk this sounds dumb how did palestine forfeite thier land if the jews came in nd attacked them for it its not forfeite its defeat and thats why the violence between palestine and israel will never end unless the jews decide to let palestine have control over the land just think of it as a couple homeless guys from the street come in to your house and tell you that they have no where to go and belive that your house is thiers and if you refuse they kill ur family except the police(authority/england)tell you that your wrong becuase the guys have no where to go

Sathurangan 16 months ago

I think this is another Jewish propaganda to justify the crimes committed against Palestinians by the Jewish military and citizens. Jews are doing to Arabs what the Nazis had purportedly done to them. I wish the Arabs are treated more humanly in Palestine. I hope there is peace in the region.

tajdar 15 months ago

It is an old Propaganda ,for how long you are going to create sympathy and justify the Israel existence. If one thing is wrong no power in the world and no logic can turn it to truth. You Jews can never leave in peace ...Inshallah.

You all will be cribbing throughout the history..till dooms come.

Masked Speaker 15 months ago

thank you john and sathurangan for understading! The jews had no where to go... so they came and slaughtered and stole homes of Palestinians.. forcing civilians to migrate to Lebanon Jordan Syria Kuwait and other countries as well....This is just another article justifying what the jews have done.... What if the nazis justified what they had done to the jews? The jews wouldnt be so happen then would they? As three of my grandparents are palestinian i understand the struggle and discrimination Palestinians face. I have been to Palestine and have experienced the way the jews treat us...palestinians who were actually born in palestine cannot have a citizenship, instead they have to apply for it and wait as if they are foreigners when indeed the true foreignerrs are the so called jews. My grandfather died waiting for citizenship in his own country. I believe if they were real jews they would understand what they did wrong. The fact is that the real jews understand and are against the way Palestine was taken and turned into Israel..Also, jews were not treated like humans during the holocaust and i feel nothing but sadness for them, because being stripped of humanity is the saddest thing to watch, and the saddest thing to go through. Watching men women and children being killed in Palestine is also sad. Watching the seize of gaza was unbearably sad to see. They massacred women and children mercilessly and blew up their homes, schools and hospitals, they did not allow food into the country, they did not allow weapons of defence and they did not allow medicine. IF YOU BELIEVE THIS IS RIGHT OR JUST DEFENSE ON THE ISRAELI PART I FEEL SORRY for your ignorance. Palestinians are treated like dogs in their own country and stripped of their possessions if the Israelis wish to have it. Their homes are demolished to build malls and to establish Jewish settlements, my grandfather had a massive amount of land stolen from him by force in Jerusalem. Why?Because they can steal if they want.jEWS CHRISTIANS AND MUSLIMS LIVED HAPPILY TOGETHER AT ONE TIME.WHAT HAPPENED?? At the same time i agree Mahmoud Abbas is a traitor, and ignorant man who is coward and cannot even fend for his own people, let alone himself. He has put his country under more suffering. I believe in the prophecies that Palestine will become a country once again, and all the decendants of those who were forced to flee and become refugees, will one day come back to their land and chant in gratitude towards the one and only God. May this day come soon inshallah. -Amin

By the way Sheila, please tell me what was the Holy Land called before it was occupied in '48? Palestine, correct? Yes, so for all you who know nothing of the subject please realize there is a such thing as Palestine...

I find this hub full of BS. Sorry, but putting Poland next to Nazi Germany and Austria has no justification. Saying that Kielce pogrom was part of some misterious common program of planned violence is just showing that you're not familiar with history of this country at all and what was going on after the war. By comparing a crime commited by relatively small group of people to organised extermination commited by Nazis you are offending memory of millions of Poles who lost their lives not only in death camps but also on all fronts of the war.

As to the the keeping Jews in the camps after the war - I remind you that during the war in various concentration and POW camps were held millions of people from whole Europe NOT ONLY JEWS. And after war all of them were placed temporarily in Displaced Persons Camps. So Jews were treated just like all others. Death was not only a Jewish thing during and after the war. There were millions of people from other nations which suffered and died in the same way but you seem to think that Jewish pain was bigger then theirs. That's damn arrogant and selfish.

This story is garbage! The only reason Isreal is still around is because Americans keep supplying them with artillary and money. And going the only reason they have "ISREAL" is because Americans practically said "You can go slaughter every palestinian that lives there, and call it your home". The holocaust needed to happen and should not have ended. Nothing justifies for what the Jews have done. They threw Deutschland into poverty.

lebron6 3 days ago

What happened to the JEWS at holocaust, they TRULY deserved it. Look now what they are doing to the poor people of Palestine and other Muslims.!! and Americans are helping them.!!

I find this funny, how minor pogroms in POland are beeing underlined. Poland had one of the biggest Jewish population in Europe, Jews since middle ages were able to live, trade, and had the same rights, where Western Europe was expelling them (spain, germany) but know although Poland has the higheest Righteous Among Nations, Poland never surrended to Nazis and created underground Scheeme to Aid the jews(Zegota) in the media and internent i only hear about Kielce and Jedwabne, some polish idiots/criminals murder those poor people and the whole nation is held responsibble(Polish President officialy appologised for this in Jedwabne) Nowadays you cannot say Nazi and Germany in one sentence, it was not Russia who atatck Poland but Stalin, but when some criminals killed few jews, the whole Polish Nation is beeing mucked adn had to appologies. Nasty double standard. Shalom
