is, first, an alien. And an alien is someone who comes from another country and does not have allegiance to your country.
Aliens fit into many categories. Many are simply travellers, visiting your country. Others have gotten permission to go to school in your country. Some even have permission to work in your country. And there are some who have married a citizen of your country, are living in your country permanently, but have not become a citizen of your country. All of these aliens' allegiance is still to his/her country of birth. But they are in your country with permission, and so they are legal aliens.
An illegal alien is in your country without permission, without authorization, and often is not in your country to reside there permanently. An illegal alien might come and go, entering and leaving your country at will. This sort of illegal alien most often is involved in some sort of international crime. Most often, these illegal aliens cross borders without authorization because they are carrying illegal goods.
When these illegal aliens enter your country, they want to remain unknown to the authorities while they conduct their illegal business. Then they leave.
An immigrant, though, is someone who comes to your country with the intention to live in your country permanently. An immigrant has received permission to live in your country.
An illegal immigrant is the same as an immigrant, except he/she has not been authorized to live in your country.
The majority of illegal immigrants in any country are otherwise law-abiding, having left their mother-countries because the living conditions are inferior there. They are simply seeking a better life.
Yet, because they are in your country without authorization, they have made themselves vulnerable to others who take advantage of their status. Also, they remain citizens of their mother -countries, which keeps them on the outside of your society.
For the most part, it is not illegal immigrants who cause problems for the countries they enter, it is the illegal aliens, those who come and go, bringing crime with them.
Let's differentiate: an illegal immigrant is living permanently in your country, while an illegal alien is only in your country to commit crimes.
These are not formal definitions, the words immigrant and alien are quite interchangable, but it's a way to characterize the differences between illegal residents who just want to raise their families, and illegal aliens whose lives are wrapped in criminal undertakings.
It is the illegal aliens who must be stopped at the borders, and the illegal aliens who must be found within your borders, jailed, and then deported, because it is the illegal aliens who commit crimes against all of the people in the country. It is a benefit to every person in your country to remove these types from your society.

Sheila, I might add that the illegal employers are as much, if not more, to blame for our illegal immigration woes as well. If not for the carrot of employment (while paying no taxes), most of the illegals would not make the hazardous journey across the border. Also, let's not forget another player in this illegal immigration problem; the Mexican government. The Mexican government has never shown any respect for the U.S. border. The way they actively help illegals is an abomination. If it was any other country beside the U.S., their actions would be considered an act of war. Try illegally crossing into North Korea. Try illegally crossing into China. Try illegally trying to cross into MEXICO. Yet the Arizona is blasted for wanting to protect its citizens from the drug cartels and illegal aliens.
It's time to put U.S. troops on the border and make it permanent. I guarantee a few M-1 Abrams and Hueys with about 50K combat troops will stop ALL illegal immigration.

The media keeps conveniently omitting the word "Illegal" in their news stories. How convenient. The overwhelming majority of USA Citizens are against Illegal Immigration, but the media keeps stirring the pot as if there are racial undertones to the movement to secure our borders. There are none. I didn't make this up but it's very true. Illegal is not a race!

It's a good point distinguishing illegal alien and illegal immigrant, but how do you really determine "intent"? Do you really ask people who crossed our border illegally "are you here to stay, or are you here only temporarily?"
While it would be nice to distinguish the two, in reality it is probably pointless.
Perhaps that is why so called "immigration reform" activists wants another run of "amnesty" to allow the illegal immigrants to "convert". Yet republicans are already crying "no amnesty, no way". It's a mess.
Immigrants or aliens, it's all the same to me. All have broken the law and should not be rewarded for doing so.
Lets remember a key word here: illegal. The term applies to both. Deport all illegals. Apply for a temporary, renewable, work visa...then apply for permanent status. Works in all other Central and So. American countries. We welcome good citizens who commit to OBEYING the law. Start out that way.

Illegals and aliens belong to the same category. They not only enjoy the various benefits but sometimes fight for their rights as if they are legally entitled to it.If the native Americans take up all the jobs in the US, then the illegal immigrants will never set foot in search of a better livelihood here.
