MAO WAS A COMMUNITY ORGANIZER
71HE ORGANIZED THE PEASANTS.
And then he watched them die. By the millions. It's believed eighty million Chinese died under Mao, most of them peasants. Most of them died of starvation.
Some of Mao's early writings still exist. Such as this one, from when he was 24 and still a student: "Of course there are people and objects in the world, but they are all there only for me".
He also wrote: "People like me only have a duty to ourselves; we have no duty to other people".
When he was 25, he wrote: "Women can do as much physical labor as men. It's just that they can't do such work during childbirth". That was in 1919, when men worked in the fields and women worked in the home.
When he was 27, Mao began getting money from Moscow for his community organizing. At that time, he wrote that he was happy in his new job, spending most of his time taking care of his health. "I don't have any burden of work or responsibility", he gleefully reported.
During the next decades he clawed his way up in the Communist Party and organized the peasants to fight with the Communists. He promised the peasants their lives would be better.
Yet once Mao was in power in China, his early beliefs were put into practice.
He wanted to be a military superpower. He wanted nuclear weapons. He needed to buy the technology and the means of production.
The peasants paid for it. Paid dearly.
Mao sold the food the Chinese peasants grew. He sold it to the Soviet Union.
The peasants were made to plant and tend and harvest the crops, and then the food was taken away. It became a crime for anyone to have food in their homes. What they were allowed, not even enough to live on, was rationed out to them.
Women were forced to work in the fields along with the men.
At one time, Mao said the peasants should be told to eat sweet potato leaves, which had always been food for the pigs.
The trees had no leaves because the people ate them.
Eventually, in 1958, Mao forced the peasants out of their homes and into collective farms where they slept in dormitories and lined up to receive their ration of cooked food. This way, they couldn't steal food, and their overseers were able to dictate their work hours.
At one commune, Mao even experimented with replacing people's names with numbers. He wanted to remove all individuality from the peasants. He wanted them to be a herd.
Mao's Great Leap Forward caused the greatest famine ever. Ever. At least 38 million Chinese died of starvation during those 4 years. All because Mao wanted nuclear weapons. He believed nuclear weapons would put him in the position of being the head of all of the Communist countries.
Mao was ambitious - for himself.
He wanted the world to believe Communism was not only working but thriving in China. He wanted the world to see him as the most capable leader, the one who should be leading all of the Communist world.
Maybe the whole world one day.
In 1959 he gave sixty million dollars to Castro in Cuba.
And he ordered the peasants to plant crops over the graves of the dead, saying, "Deaths have benefits; they can fertilize the ground".
Mao wanted technology and weapons from the Soviet Union, and he wanted the Soviet Union to be dependent on China for food.
In 1960 he thought he was stronger than the Soviets, and challenged Khruschev's leadership.
Khruschev immediately recalled the Soviet advisers in China, leaving Mao without the means of producing nuclear weapons.
He'd gambled and lost.
So he decided to pay what he owed the Soviet Union ahead of schedule. Twenty-two million Chinese died of starvation in 1960.
Later, Mao blamed the famine on the Soviets, claiming they'd demanded repayment immediately. It wasn't true. He wanted the Soviet advisers back in China to work on his weapons. That's why he sent so much more food to them.
Today, Mao's lie is the Party line. Communism still holds the Chinese people in its grip. And Communists around the world are keeping the cult of Mao alive. These people know the truth, because the information is available outside of China. They know the truth and they accept it. They understand it. They ask eachother, "Has the world missed 80 million Chinese peasants?"
Mao left no will when he died. That's very unusual in the Chinese culture. And Mao was a very, very wealthy man.
In 1918 he wrote: "People like me are not building achievements to leave for future generations".
How can anyone venerate him?
At the end of his life, Mao was full of self-pity because he had never achieved becoming ruler of the world. Good.

Wow, what a fantastic hub, I just learned so much I had no idea, who does this sound like? Yes, or leader who lies...just watch whenever he opens his mouth. We are his peasants if we don't get smart, and take action. Rate way up and useful
Sheila, This is an excellent, well written history of a madman and the horror of the lives of the Chinese people. Communism has always been destructive to the people and this sounds like the direction our country is being pushed into.
Thanks for a very well written and informative piece. Perhaps some of Obama's pals should read it before they tell the world what a great man Mao was. Insanity rules the day.
very informative hub. I've wondered what a "community organizer" is. I suspect it is whatever you want it to be. I've worked for the government a large part of my life. Titles are quite flexable. In most positions there a official job titles and "working titles, which is what you go under on the job.
Very informative and very sad as well. Thanks for this hub.
So much for those who would walk around quoting Mao, Stalin, or Lenin in order to express their own intellectualism. Apparently community organizers only require a silver tongue and some creative lies to get the peasants on board for the revolution...they must be pretty worked up in Chicago! History seems to remember bastards such as Mao for all the wrong reasons...could that be an accident or just the way someone wanted the history book to read? Very dangerous things work our world with the most honest face. We should be careful. Thanks Sheila! WB
Great Hub Sheila!!
The wealth of information is overwhelming!!!
Thank you for sharing!!
Mao was the poster boy for "community organizer." Their motto is, as his was, everything that is exists only for me. He promised change to the Chinese and he brought it. By eliminating so many millions of them.
Does "community organizer" and "change" sound familiar?
Thanks for the alert, sheila, will we pay attention before it's too late?
what a monster. I guess that's why they had a Christmas ornament with his picture on the White House Christmas tree.
shiela b., it is amazing how one person could get so much evil power. I am glad that no one in American history has been able to amass that much power. People always talk about how many people have died in the name or Christianity but the number of all this who died under those who falsely wore the name "Christian" pale in comparison to those who have died in the last 100 years under the Godless doctrines of communism. Keep up the good work.
Shiela,
Another home run-see you at the reeducation camp.

I went "slumming" this morning on hubpages. I was looking specifically for "bad behavior". Just because I haven't found it here doesn't mean it isn't there! Joke! I put up a hub specifically talking about Hamas, short and uninformed but sweet, to see if I get the same treatment as you have. I'll let you know.
But, since I was "slumming", I dropped in here and couldn't stop until I was done. What a great piece. We are in so much trouble. Our stupid little democracy doesn't get it not even one little bit. What a bunch of illiterate idiots that don't read (pun intended). America, wake the heck up! Your stupidity will be the demise of us all and I don't take kindly to that. I will be the American looking guy that will rip your head off because of your stupidity! Grow some brains America before it is too late.

Excellent piece! You should have included his battle with Chang Ki Chek and the Japanese starting in the 1930's. He did one positive thing, he united China. Of course it was by force. Good informative article.
