IS JORAN VAN DER SLOOT A CRAZY PSYCHOPATH?
77Joran Van der Sloot is accused of killing Stephany Flores on the 5th anniversary of the disappearance of Natalee Holloway.
May 30th. The date cannot be a coincidence.
The date had to have been chosen.
Five years. To the day. The fifth anniversary.
Beth Twitty, Natalee Holloway's mother, arrived in Aruba on May 31st. For an innocent person, that might be the day his nightmare began. That's the day he was first confronted about the whereabouts of Natalee. The day he became a suspect.
Or he might remember the day he was first arrested.
Or the day he was set free.
Or the day his father died.
There are so many dates to remember, some with sadness, some with a celebration.
Yet the date when Natalee was last seen alive seems to be the one seared into his memory.
Why, if he had nothing to do with it?
He was in Peru for a poker tournament. It seems he bankrolled his gambling in the tournament with $25,000. he received as a downpayment for promising to tell about how Natalee died and where her body is.
Obviously, he was quite anxious to be in that casino in that country on that day.
(Anita Van der Sloot, his mother, told the press through her lawyer that she spoke with him after he was arrested in Chili. He "certainly did not confess", she said, and expressed her shock that he's being accused of this murder.)
Five years previous, to the day, he left a casino in Aruba with Natalee and she was never seen again.
He left the casino in Peru with Stephany and she was never seen alive again.
Remember the original story Joran told about taking Natalee to his house, where he had a separate apartment? Maybe that was true.
He took Stephany to his room in a hostel.
Where she was later found dead. Murdered.
The latest reports are that Stephany's neck had been broken. Doctors report it is not easy to break someone's neck, that it takes a lot of strength. One doctor suggested that to break someone's neck, you'd wrap your arm around her neck and then bend it.
Joran Van der Sloot is 6'3" tall. Much taller than most women. It is easy for him to wrap his arm around a woman's neck. In fact, it is very common for men as tall as he to playfully put his arm around a woman in that manner.
Might he have broken Natalee's neck, in his room, and then run to his father for help in disposing of the body? His father was widely quoted as saying if there's no body they don't have a case. He seemed quite confident Natalee's body would never be found.
Joran Van der Sloot has confessed, according to Peruvian authorities. He is reported as saying he didn't want to do it.
His defense seems to be that he left to get coffee and Stephany used his computer to learn who he is and of his involvement in the Natalee Holloway case.
He claims that when he returned, she confronted him and he was angry because she had invaded his privacy. And oh, yes, she hit him first.
How did she know his password to get his computer up?
If the police learn there'd been a computer search about him, they might also consider he'd decided to 'play' with his victim, terrorizing her before killing her. Showed her who he is. Told her he'd killed Natalee. Told her how he'd killed Natalee. By breaking her neck. Like this...
And where does privacy begin and end? It was his room. He'd invited her in.
Also, if Stephany had been able to use his computer to learn about him, and she'd read about his involvement in the Natalee Holloway disappearance, would she have stayed right there to confront him, or would she have run out of there as fast as she could?
Psychopaths think they won't get caught. They think they're smarter than everyone. Joran Van der Sloot will continue to believe that, even as he sits in a Peruvian jail. He thinks he'll find a way out of this. His mother is reportedly in Peru now. A Peruvian newspaper is reporting he told his mother his confession is not true, that he was coerced into confessing.
When is it a mother's responsibility to consider the victims? When is a mother supposed to realize her son is a danger to society? As awful as it is for a mother to see her son in prison, should she admit that's where he belongs?
And was Joran Van der Sloot celebrating the anniversary of Natalee's death? By repeating it? By killing another woman in as close a manner as circumstances allowed?
More information is coming out of Peru. From a transcript of Van der Sloot's confession is his statement that Stephany went to his room with him to play poker on line.
He also admits: "I was explaining to her that five years ago I was accused in the case of a missing girl...all of a sudden she hit me."
I wrote earlier, and left it in, a few paragraphs back, that maybe he was 'playing' with Stephany, cat and mouse, enjoying himself by torturing her. The quote above makes that seem likely.
The reports that Anita Van der Sloot was in Peru turned out to be false. It seems she had planned to go to Peru, then changed her mind.
In an interview for Dutch TV, she is reported as saying Joran, even as a young boy, often snuck out of the house at night. That statement provokes a question: Then why did his parents give him his own separate apartment, away from the house?
Certainly they didn't for a moment imagine he was a psychopath capable of murder; certainly Anita Van de Sloot is not responsible for her son's crimes. Giving Joran his own separate apartment was their solution to a problem.
They could not control him. They could not make him obey family rules. Instead, they thought the solution was to let him come and go from his own apartment, rather than leaving the family home. He was probably leaving the house unlocked.
It wouldn't be surprising to learn Joran Van der Sloot himself suggested having his own apartment would solve the problem. He seems to have been quite manipulative.
"My son is sick in the head", Anita is also reported to have stated, though she wrongly believes it was the stresses of the Natalee Holloway disappearance which caused his 'sickness'.
If he killed Stephany Flores, Anita said, "He'll have to pay the price". It seems she's accepting the truth, little by little.
She also stated, "I can't cry for Joran like I did for Paul. I hope he gets psychological help".
Joran once showed his temper on film when he threw a glass of wine into the eyes of a reporter who'd been interviewing him on TV.
Joran had left Aruba and hadn't seen his parents for a long time before his father died. He went home to Aruba for the funeral and stayed. Within four months he was off to Peru and another dead girl.
His mother has said he was scheduled to go to a hospital for psychiatric help when he, instead, left his mother a note and took off for the poker tournament.
It sounds as though he was giving his mother a hard time, and she was insisting he get help. Maybe his father had always shielded her from Joran.
Could it be that his father was the only one who knew the truth about where Natalee Holloway's body is, and when his father died, he was free? Free to kill again. Because the only one who knew he had killed once was dead.
It only took him a short time to come up with the idea to continue torturing Natalee's family by saying he'd sell them the information about her death.
On Good Morning America, Anita Van der Sloot said, "I'm not going to visit Joran in Peru. I don't have any feeling that it can add up to anything. I want to keep distance. I think it will bring emotions up that I'm not ready for right now. I'm not a police officer. I'm a Mom."
She knows; she knows.
Commentators continue to ask, "What was his motive? Was it robbery? Was it rape?"
Why don't they realize his 'motive' was murder? There are people who murder because that is what they like to do.

The guys is an idiot and so is his family, he was guilty the first time, however, why would be walk away with all the forensics, including a body in a room? His father helped him clean up the first time, why would he be so sloppy now? Maybe he was set-up who knows, I hope he rots in Peru, they will like this new jail bird...
he'll be tried where, in Peru? I hope they have all the evidence and all of this is carefully examined. Some say he is a sociopath and he calls himself a pathological liar. the crime reporter Peter R de Vries made a lot of money off the secret videotaped confession, but that evidence was rejected.
Joran said Holloway started to have a seizure, possibly an epileptic fit.
Hope they have a tight case.
Awesome! I was going to write about him, but I don't have time with the cooking contest going on!
Here in the states we are supposed to have the presumption of innocence , but it seems to me this guy is a bonafide serial killer type. Twice in five years ? If it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck its probably a duck.
Creepy coincidence but maybe not, as you pointed out. To think that he would celebrate death with another death. That's totally insane.
good article. I wonder too if he is crazy or really just hates women. I am sure he thinks women have a few uses, but he doesn't seem to interested in building any type of a future. I hope that he enjoys the next 50 or so years living in a Peruvian prison and getting a new opinion about how men sometimes treat their "women"!!!
Peru huh heard the jails are nice and comfy let him stay there for a while with a nice 450 lb spanish gentleman with a taste for american tough guys- he can give him a visit him everynight at night.....
Great Hub Sheila~ I hope that Peru does not botch the investigation and that they have all of their ducks in a row. I think it is about to hit the fan for Joran. I have to wonder if there are other young women that have suffered the same fate with Joran. Let's hope that justice will be reached for these women and their families!
Sheila, I think this guy is a serial killer and he may have killed some we don't know about. I know if he gets 35 years in a jail in Peru after killing a Peruvian woman he will not be liking life much. Thanks for a good article.
What a sad situation. So many people's lives have been turned upside down and devastated, not to mention lost. This young man is beyond anything I can imagine. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.
I think the guy is guilty. I think there's just too much that points to him. The problem is not the evidence, but the lack of attention to detail in the country of origin of the crime, and lack of experience in such matters.
His day is coming. Sooner than we think. It's already begun, has it not?
Thanks for putting the pieces together sheila. Crazy or not, he sure is creepy. He got away with murder before, but he sure didn't try to hid anything at the scene in Peru.
And from what I understand this death most assuredly could have been and should have been prevented. But I won't go into that. You write a good piece, all the cards are on the table, I think we all see his hand, except his Mother that is. Maybe one day he will own up and tell Natalee's Mom what happened to her daughter and where she is, maybe he will make peace with God and cleanse his dark soul of the secrets he holds there and maybe just maybe he will never walk the streets again to threaten another young woman with his evil ways. Great Hub!! Thank you!!
I am stressing on this whole situation. I don’t understand the confession/reaction of violence to Stephanie. Is he not taking his meds? How can a kid react this way? There must be psyche history on him somewhere. I don’t know. I feel for him/families and all the victims. Never should have gone this far. Awareness anybody? What do his friends think? The age factor reminds me of dislocated youth Rich or not, something is very wrong here! I feel for all, a sad awaking.
He is sociopath and in all probability a serial killer. He does not deserve the insanity defense.
The 5 year anniversary killing is a bit of a stretch as a coincidence. I always thought his dad disposed of Natalee's body for him, whatever the cause of death. I was "sorry" to hear of his father's death, because now we will never hear what his dad might have said or confessed at some point. Psychopaths/sociopaths/antisocial personalities are not considered crazy by the mental health community or by law. They are in touch with reality and know the difference between right and wrong. An insanity defense is a nonstarter for this guy. I wish Peru had life sentences for murderers. This guy could get out in 35 years and kill again.
joran is fine
I hope van der Sloot is acquitted. The judge declared him sane which means he has the right to sue those referred to him as a psychopath etcetera for slander.
Oh yes the date was chosen, not by Joran but by those who lured him into Peru

Sheila - It all seems too coincidental to be only a coincidence. From what I read about der Sloot after he was questioned about Natalee's death, he appears to present the personality of a sociopath.
Such a person believes they do not have to follow laws and the mores of others and have difficulty understanding right vs. wrong.
